Health+Safety 10 Exhibition – Reebok Stadium - Bolton
 |
On the 13 and 14th October 2010 Environmental Essentials was proud to launch its new interactive training courses whilst exhibiting at the Health+Safety 10 Exhibition in Bolton.
Utilizing a Pebble hand held device our trainer is able to ask the audience questions throughout the course and the Pebble system allows for yes/no, true/false, numeric and multiple choice answers.
|
| |
|
This allows the trainer to gauge the level of understanding the students have throughout the training so they can refresh on areas where responses are incorrect to ensure delegates obtain the most comprehensive course.
“An audience response system is a proven way to increase attentiveness, knowledge uptake and content retention in a training environment.” |

THE STOKE BIG CONVERSATION – Helping Young People in Our Community
This was a groundbreaking event held at the Kings Hall, Stoke on 23rd November hosted by Sinead Butters, Chief Executive Aspire Group and Chair of Employment and Skills Board and John van de Laarschot, Chief Executive, Stoke on Trent City Council.
Business in the Community were inviting business leaders to meet with 50 young people from Stoke on Trent for the Big Conversation. The objective of the event was to encourage businesses of all sizes and types and across all sectors to help create a better understanding of what we can do to make young people’s first experience of the world of work more inspiring, interesting and insightful.
The Stoke Big Conversation launched the Work Inspiration campaign in the area and this gave the opportunity to:
- Group conversations between local young people and senior Stoke business leaders
- Provide an overview of businesses and professions in real companies that pupils may be interested in
- Share with young people how real business leaders progressed through their career.
Environmental Essentials attended the event as a leader in their business sector and have pledged their support for the campaign to benefit the young people of the local community and will become active partners both with Business in the Community and The Big Conversation going forward.

The Dave Willcocks Asbestos Victim Support Group was set up to assist all asbestos victims and families in the South Cheshire, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent area. The primary aim of this event was to raise awareness amongst tradesmen that they are more at risk than they think from asbestos and to also encourage tradesmen to find out more about asbestos and the precautions they should be taking. |

Many Resident Social Landlords’ have undertaken inspections in common areas of blocks but HSG264 takes this a step further and establishes parameters for collecting housing related data.

Asbestos Removal – Asbestos Works Net Maximum H&S Fine
A contractor to Norwich City Council was handed the maximum fine over health and safety breaches concerning asbestos removal.
East Anglian Construction, a subsidiary of Peter Colby Commercials, was fined £30,000 after it pleaded guilty to six charges of breaching the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006. Norwich City Council was also awarded its full costs of £10,203, a statement by the council said.
The charges related to two separate occasions in early 2007 and 2008 when employees of the company were carrying out work in Diamond House, Vulcan Road, Norwich – a property owned by Peter Colby Commercials.
While working on the property employees removed asbestos insulating board tiles from the ceilings, work which the company was not licensed to carry out.
“The magistrates clearly viewed this as a serious breach of the regulations,” Susan Thomas, a city council health and safety officer, said. “Six charges in total were laid and the maximum fine available to the court was made in each case.
“These were not trivial health and safety matters and I hope that others who may be thinking of acting in the same way think again. The dangers of working with asbestos are well known and have been for many years and those in control of premises should know what they are dealing with.”
Asbestos Update – Insurance
Asbestos victims will suffer an inevitable, breathless death without even any compensation to make their last days more bearable.
That's the human cost of last months Appeal Court ruling as insurers battle to avoid paying men and women condemned to an early grave by inhaling fatal fibres decades ago.
The issue could have been settled had the last Labour government legislated in Parliament to close a loophole exploited by the insurance industry.
Alas it did not, and we hold out no hope that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition will do the decent thing.
Insurers could, of course, recognise the legitimacy of the asbestos victims' case and throw in the towel rather than going to the Supreme Court but that, too, is unlikely.
The Daily Mirror campaigns for justice for asbestos sufferers and we support the struggle for compensation every step of the way.
But it's hard to avoid the impression that if insurance company execs and judges were dying of mesothelioma, this would've been settled a long time ago.
