Why fit test?

RPE fit testing is a way of ensuring a tight fitting facepiece (a mask) provides an adequate seal to the wearers face. It’s instrumental in identifying which mask is suitable, but perhaps more importantly which masks are not suitable for the wearer.
The shape and size of an individual’s face changes significantly from person to person, so it is very unlikely that one mask will fit everyone. Therefore, where a mask is being used as a control measure it is a legal requirement to carry out face fit testing.
An inadequate fit will reduce the wearer’s protection significantly, the immediate and long term effects of ill-fitting masks could result in life-threatening illnesses.

Who is competent?

INDG479 states:

“Competence can be demonstrated by accreditation under the Fit2Fit RPE Fit Test Providers Accreditation Scheme. This scheme has been developed by the BSIF, together with industry stakeholders, and is supported by HSE.”
