Managing Asbestos in Schools

It is imperative that schools have an active plan for managing asbestos containing materials which may be present in their buildings.

The use of asbestos in public buildings across the United Kingdom is well documented, with the Department for Education suggesting asbestos is present within 8 in 10 UK schools. In recent years, a rise in asbestos related deaths within “white collar” occupations such as schools has led to further investigation into how asbestos is actively managed within schools.

In line with The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, it is imperative that schools have an active plan for managing asbestos containing materials which may be present. From September 2022, the Health and Safety Executive has committed to visiting schools to investigate how dutyholders are meeting their ‘Duty to Manage’

Any inspections will likely focus on the following requirements:

  • Identify the dutyholders and ensure those responsible are competent
  • Take reasonable steps to identify asbestos within your premises
  • Develop an asbestos register
  • Develop an asbestos management plan

Environmental Essentials are keen to help make schools a safer place for staff and students alike, as well as ensuring any dutyholders are doing their part when managing asbestos.
