  • P401 Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM)

    Course duration: 3 days

    Gain knowledge of the theory and practice of asbestos sample identification techniques using polarised light microscopy (PLM).

    Who is it for?

    Anyone involved in laboratory-based analysis of asbestos samples. Attendees should have 3 months’ prior experience.

    What are the objectives?

    The course gives you an understanding of the nature of asbestos and its associated health effects, as well as reviewing products containing asbestos. Learn the theory and application of polarised light microscopy, and the analytical procedures involved in HSG248 – The Analyst’s Guide.

  • P402 Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings

    Course duration: 3 days

    Learn the basics of building surveying for the presence of asbestos, bulk sampling and management procedures to minimise exposure.

    Who is it for?

    Anyone wishing to inspect premises to locate and identify asbestos containing materials and safely take samples for analysis.

    What are the objectives?

    This course equips you with the skills and practical knowledge to undertake asbestos surveys and use various sampling techniques. It covers the management of identified asbestos to minimise exposure, as well as general guidance on management procedures.

    Please note there is practical element to the course which will require a face to face / in person assessment.

  • P403 Asbestos Fibre Counting (PCM)

    Course duration: 3 days

    Gain theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of fibre counting of asbestos air samples using phase contrast microscopy (PCM).

    Who is it for?

    Anyone wishing to carry out airborne asbestos fibre counting. Candidates who wish to carry out asbestos air monitoring and clearance work (including 4-stage re-occupancy certification) also require BOHS P404 qualification.

    What are the objectives?

    The course deals with the theory and practice of fibre counting of asbestos air samples using phase contrast microscopy (PCM) techniques. It will equip you with the practical knowledge and skills to be able to carry out asbestos fibre counting in accordance with HSG248.

  • P404 Air Sampling and Clearance Testing of Asbestos

    Course duration: 2 days

    Gain theoretical and practical knowledge of techniques for air sampling and clearance testing procedures.

    Who is it for?

    Anyone wishing to carry out asbestos air monitoring and clearance work including 4-stage re-occupancy certification following asbestos removal and treatment works. Candidates who wish to carry out this work will also require BOHS P403 qualification.

    What are the objectives?

    You will gain an understanding of the techniques of air sampling, enclosure inspection, clearance testing and the 4-stage certificate of re-occupation. Gain the practical knowledge and skills to be able to carry out asbestos air sampling and clearance work in accordance with HSG248.

  • P405 Asbestos Management in Buildings – Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire

    Course duration: 5 days

    Gain practical knowledge and skills to manage asbestos in buildings and learn the basics of asbestos removal procedures.

    Who is it for?

    Those responsible for managing asbestos in buildings and auditing asbestos removal projects. Duty holders or anyone who provides assistance to them in the discharge of their responsibilities. This includes anyone procuring asbestos related services. Anyone wishing to progress into asbestos management from asbestos surveying or analysis.

    What are the objectives?

    This course equips you with the practical skills to manage asbestos in buildings and a basic knowledge of asbestos removal procedures. It covers a broad range of asbestos related topics including the nature of asbestos, its properties and health effects, asbestos in buildings, asbestos management plans and strategies, as well as the roles of asbestos surveyors, contractors and analysts.

    Candidates are expected to have a detailed knowledge of the types of asbestos and their health hazards and the methods of control including personal protection. This can be achieved by taking BOHS P400 module.

    Assessment

    The practical assessment must be carried out by the Tutor during the relevant part of the course for all candidates. This is to ensure that every candidate can demonstrate their individual ability and correct method to:
    1. Convert survey data into a building management action plan
    2. Thoroughly appraise contractor documentation and methods
    3. Carry out inspections of an enclosure and hygiene unit both prior to works and post remediation
    4. Understand the roles played by the various parties including the client, contractor’s contract manager and supervisor, HSE Inspector/EHO, analyst and TU representative etc and appreciate the pressures and demands on various parties during an asbestos removal project.

    B: Written Examination 1

    This is an open-book examination comprising of approximately 35 (140 marks) short answer questions illustrated by photographs and diagrams as appropriate to be answered in 120 minutes. The examination covers sections 1 and 2 of the syllabus, with achievable marks in proportion to the time allocation given on the front page of the syllabus and is overseen by a BOHS invigilator. The overall pass mark is 55% with a requirement to reach at least 45% of the available marks in each section of the syllabus.

    C: Written Examination 2

  • D407 Managing Asbestos in Premises – The Duty Holder Requirements

    Course duration: 3 days

    Designed to provide the practical knowledge and skills to manage asbestos in premises and give a basic knowledge of asbestos management plans.

    Who is it for?

    • Duty Holders
    • Anyone providing Duty Holder services, including Specialist Consultants.
    • Anyone who is responsible for writing and/or auditing asbestos management plans and writing asbestos policy.

    What are the objectives?
    To develop an in-depth understanding of how asbestos in non-domestic premises must be appropriately managed whilst complying with the requirements of the governing legal framework and specific legal responsibilities. The development of this knowledge will also include the ability to write the required and detailed overarching asbestos management plan and policy for the organisation.

    Understand the legislation relating to asbestos and its management, while gaining the knowledge and skills to manage asbestos in premises. Learn to identify types of asbestos materials and gain a basic knowledge of asbestos management plans, policies and procedures, their implementation and checks on effectiveness.

    Entry Requirements:

    Before taking the qualification, candidates must hold either P405 – Management of Asbestos in Buildings OR a Certificate of Competence (Asbestos). They should also be currently working in a role where they are responsible for managing asbestos in a work premises or developing the management plans for premises and factories. Where candidates do not have current experience as a Duty Holder, or were awarded the P405 qualification more than 3 years ago, training providers must assess whether the candidate is ready to take the D407 qualification.   • P400 Asbestos Foundation Level

    Course duration: 1 day

    If you are training to become an asbestos surveyor or analyst, this is the course for you

    P400 – Asbestos Surveying and Analysis is a one day foundation level course, which provides candidates with the fundamental knowledge to start a career in the asbestos surveying and analysis professions, and as a progression route to the asbestos Proficiency qualifications.

    It gives candidates an introductory level of knowledge on the health risks of asbestos fibres, and how to manage asbestos-containing materials in their work.

    The course is in line with the recommended Foundation Material in the HSE’s Appendix 9: Core competencies to be achieved in asbestos core modules in the draft version of HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide 2021 published for public consultation.

    The main subject areas of the course are:

    • Introduction.
    • Health effects of asbestos.
    • Use and application of asbestos products.
    • Legislation and guidance.
    • Personal protection and decontamination procedures.
    • Asbestos management requirements.

    How is the course assessed?

    There is a multiple choice assessment at the end of the course, to test the candidate’s learning and which the training provider will invigilate. Upon successful completion, candidates receive a course completion certificate.
